The Salty Gypsea
If you follow the colorful chalk words from the corner of Wharf and Austin Streets, along Gallery Row in Rockport’s Art’s District, you will arrive at the Salty Gypsea Boutique and Bike Rental. Opened in March 2021 by Ashley Becvar, the Salty Gypsea is an adorable aquamarine hued shop with a mix of funky designer clothing, novelty gifts, fishing apparel, and accessories.
Ashley and her family moved to Rockport recently, loving the small-town vibe, the seaside life, and the artistic community they have found here. She comes by her retail roots honestly as she and her mother own the Vintage Gypsy in Burnet. Ashley likes to say her mom is the vintage, and she is the gypsy! As an experienced boutique owner and someone who studied marketing, Ashley also applied her personal sense of style to create an adorable, bohemian shop that has something for everyone.
Filled with free-spirited, colorful items, Ashley’s boutique even carries custom tee shirts she makes herself. You can also find the Savannah Jane line of ladies’ clothing, boho style tops with Mexican style embroidery similar to the brand Johnny Was and Crazy Train tee shirts, an affordable Western wear brand. And don’t forget the Myra Bags, reasonably priced, hand-crafted, and eco-friendly purses made with upcycled canvas and cowhide, that come in shoulder bags, totes, and weekenders. You can also find personal care items from the Maui Soap Company and Jandals, the popular Japanese style sandals from J Slips Hawaii. Ashley is the exclusive retail outlet in Rockport for What the Fin performance beach wear from Key West.
If you need a gift, Ashley has lots to choose from, including LIT Handler koozies, reversible octopus key chains (a big trend with kids), and beautiful car freshies, handmaid locally by Courtney of Unique Scentsations. You can find dish towels, funny socks, fishing shirts and hats, and even jewelry here. The Salty Gypsea has a youthful energy but also carries unisex goods like wallets and sunglasses that appeal to all ages.
Ashley does electric bike rentals too, so you can explore Rockport or toodle around the beach without exhausting yourself but still burning calories and getting your steps in!
Though slightly off the main drag (like steps only!), if you follow the chalk to the Salty Gypsea you’ll find yourself discovering an innovative boutique that is both salty and bohemian, so indulge your inner gypsy and check it out!
